ORTA Collaborates with Nature Coatings to Introduce a Bluesky Solution to Colors and Coatings

Orta Creates The Most Climate Justice And Social Justice Denim Ever

ORTA advances its Bluesky mission of creating the most climate justice, planet justice and social justice denim ever, from regenerative raw fibers to wood and mineral based materials. A new generation of denim possibilities makes every piece of ORTA fabric an actionable solution for today’s eco-stressed world.

A Golden Opportunity

Where others see waste, ORTA sees a golden opportunity leading the industry towards a whole new generation of waste-free, bio-designed denim. ORTA’s BIO AWAKE denim is crafted with the ultimate bluesky solution for black color: BioBlack TX by Nature Coatings.

Innovated by Nature Coatings, BioBlack TX is a 100% bio-based, certified and carbon negative black pigment that is a direct replacement for petroleum-based carbon black. It’s made with pre-consumer industrial wood waste from FSC® certified sources from the lumber, paper, furniture and flooring industries – which means the wood waste is traceable to a sustainably managed forest.

In the US alone, approximately 50 million tonnes of wood waste were produced in 2020. (Ref: Jahan, I.; Zhang, G.; Bhuiyan, M.; Navaratnam, S. Circular Economy of Construction and Demolition Wood Waste— A Theoretical Framework Approach. Sustainability 2022, 14, 10478. https://doi.org/10.3390/ su141710478)

A Closed-Loop Circular System Of Manufacturing

BioBlack TX is produced through a closed-loop, circular system of manufacturing that emits negligible amounts of CO2. The only by-product is steam, which is captured and used to power parts of the production facility. There is no burning of the wood waste and no chemicals added in the manufacturing process of BioBlack TX. The solution is naturally free of fossil fuels and there are no detected PAHs and carcinogens in it, making it safe to touch and wear.

Orta’s Bio Awake Denim Using BioBlack TX

In collaboration with Nature Coatings, ORTA introduces BIO AWAKE denim using BioBlack TX for fabric coating and, as an industry first application, warp dyeing, offering a Bluesky color solution that sees wood waste transformed into clean color black.

“Today, we are realizing more and more that we live in a world of extremes—extreme climate stress, extreme waste, extreme resource depletion. Now is the time to reimagine our design process based on regenerative principles. It is also a time for rapid collaborative action. It’s unlikely for the textile industry to stay within the 1.5°C pathway without rethinking growth to accelerate the transition from conventional to regenerative solutions. At ORTA, we are supporting Bluesky innovations that improve biodiversity, contribute to water availability and quality, achieve healthy soils, support climate resilience, and improve livelihoods” explains Dr. Sedef Uncu Aki, who leads ORTA’s Denim Sales & Marketing, PD, R&D, Planning and Operations.

“Working in the pigment and dyes industry for over 15 years, I’ve seen the negative impact it has had on our environment and health. This inspired me to find a way to develop something better, something that is safe enough to be buried in my vegetable garden. It’s great to see this collaboration come to life – ORTA and Nature Coatings working together to make a positive impact.” Jane Palmer, CEO and Founder, Nature Coatings.
